August – Girls Life: 15 Minutes with Kat Dennings

If you loved Kat Dennings in Nick and Noroh’s Infinite Playlist, you’ll heart her even more in Shorts (in theaters Aug. 21). We caught up with Kat to get the scoop on her new role — and her funky…rock collection! GL: Tell us a little bit about Shorts.
Kat It’s about a kid named Toe who finds a magic rock that grants wishes. I play Toe’s older sister, Stacey. What happens when she gets her wish is pretty hilarious.

What’s your favorite thing about Stacey?
She loves making her little brother’s life miserable just for fun. I was the youngest in my family, so I got picked on. [Playing her] was almost like living a childhood fantasy. I got to boss someone else around!

If you had one magical power, what would it be and why?
The power of healing seems useful. And maybe flying, but I might get a little nauseous if I had to fly everywhere.

Gadgets play a big role in this movie. What’s one gadget you cant live without?
My iPod. I’m sure a lot of people say that, but if I couldn’t listen to music on planes, I would go completely bananas.

What’s your favorite song on your iPod?
“Daylight” by the band Matt and Kim. It’s a really awesome song — catchy and melodic. I think all the girls out there would love it.

You were home-schooled growing up. How was that?
I did something a little unconventional with my education. I’d take one subject and just finish it to graduation level. I actually remembered things and it made it go faster. My favorite subject was math. I know no one likes math, but I loved it!

If you could give one tip on how to break out of your shy shell this school year, what would it be?
I was very shy when I was growing up, so I completely understand. Don’t worry about what others think is cool. Don’t try to dress or act like somebody else. Just try your best to do — and wear — things that make you happy. Be proud of yourself.

What’s your favorite book?
Alice in Wonderland. It’s so beautiful, complicated and dreamlike — it’s my go-to book when I am feeling less than awesome.

What freaks you out the most?
I’m really scared of dumb horror movies. And it’s a silly thing to be scared of because they are so not real. Like Child’s Play — it’s so stupid and obviously fake, but it ruined my life. To this day, if I see a tiny doll, I freak out

Spill one random fact about yourself.
I’ve been collecting minerals for about three years. They are just very pretty and fascinating. I’d rather buy minerals than clothes!
